Abstract

The area of documentation in the People's Revolutionary Republic of Guinea has been neglected: there is a lack of managers and no means of collecting and disseminating national information. The goal of this project is to help improve documentary infrastructures in Guinea through training and the establishment of a national documentation and information system. The specific objectives of the project are to train upper and middle level staff in information sciences; set up the national coordination centre as a national affiliate of the Pan-African Documentation and Information System; and publish two experimental issues of Devindex Guinée.

Post-Project Summary

Three managers from Guinea's Centre national de documentation et d'information pour le développement (CENDID) successfully completed a master's program at the University of Montreal's School of Library Science. A fourth person took the training program for documentation technicians at the CÉGEP de Maisonneuve, also in Montreal. A 3-month practicum in reprography was arranged for a trainee at the Centre national de documentation in Rabat and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique in Paris. A 4-week course in PADIS methods was arranged at the Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa for two trainees. The first issue of Devindex Guinée was published in 1984: a print run of 1 000 copies, including 261 references. It was widely distributed at a national scientific conference in Conakry in February 1985. Publication of the second issue was planned for November 1985.
