Abstract

The craft industry occupies an important place in Guinea's economic life. It is estimated that over 10% of the population is involved in the industry, which provides about 40% of the country's manufactured goods. The textile sector is currently the country's largest craft activity with nearly 35% of the craftspeople involved in it. Dyeing is a craft practised by many associations, cooperatives, and villages that are traditionally famous for their products. The main colorant used is indigo. This project will improve traditional technologies of dyeing with indigo by focusing on the technique for producing the colorant; the method of preparing the fabric; and the dyeing process itself. It will also enable a Guinean engineer to take a 52-week intensive training course in colorant chemistry and textile technology in Canada. By developing the traditional technology, the project will increase the productivity of the craftsmen and the textile industry of the country.
