Abstract
The Liberian Government has recently emphasized local production of rice, a staple crop, in pursuit of food self-sufficiency and reduced imports. However, farmers, extension workers and researchers have all identified traditional on-farm post-harvest practices as a constraint to greater availability of rice at the farm level. This project will assess the magnitude of losses involved at various stages of the on-farm post-harvest system and introduce simple and appropriate improvements. The study will estimate losses associated with harvesting, stacking, transportation, storing, threshing, insect infestation and rodent attack, and compare the performance of traditional and improved storage systems. About 50 farmers in Bong County will be introduced to improved post-harvest practices.
