Abstract
Root crops: cassava, sweet potato, coco yam, and yam are important food crops in Liberia. However, before 1982, the year of initiation of the present research, only local varieties of these crops were grown and were characterized by very low yield potentials and susceptibility to various diseases and pests. Phase I of this project made excellent progress toward increasing the quantity and improving the quality of root and tuber crops in the country. Improved varieties of cassava that are high yielders and tolerant to the major diseases and pests were identified. Similarly, improved varieties of sweet potato and new strains of coco yam were also made available to the farmers. All of these varieties are accepted by farmers and are already widely grown in certain localities. This phase seeks to strengthen results obtained in Phase I by conducting extensive multilocation trials of the new improved materials given to farmers, testing promising new clones of these crops, and continuing to identify and use sources of disease and pest resistance.
