Abstract

Manongarivo is a protected site consisting of a mountainous region covered in primary and secondary forests representative of most of the ecosystems found in Madagascar. The population of the region practice subsistence agriculture and use mainly medicinal plants for their health needs. This project aims to make the local population more aware of the medicinal and economic importance of preserving the biodiversity of their region, while assuring that their primary health needs are met through the utilization of local medicinal herbs. Specific objectives will include laboratory and clinical verification of the efficacy of the main plants used in the clinic of Ambodisakoana; improved utilization of selected plants; dissemination of research results to the local population; development, in cooperation with the local population, of programs for managing the supply of local medicinal plants; promotion of the results to the project to authorities at the local, regional, and national levels; and investigation into ways of ensuring the survival of the local clinic of Ambodisakoana.
