Abstract
"Fences come alive" is a three-year collaborative project on the part of IDRC, the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), World Vision-Mali, and the Institut d'économie rurale and its national partners. Researchers will work with farmers in the Segou region in order to promote family and community welfare, reduce land degradation, and prevent conflicts within and between communities through wide-scale planting of live fences. Specifically, researchers will identify constraints to the adoption of live fences by individuals and communities, and refine the technology accordingly; ensure a sustainable supply of seeds and seedlings of preferred species; develop appropriate individual and community-based extension methods; and monitor the socioeconomic and environmental impact of live fences, including any reduction in conflicts. A database and geographic information system (GIS) will be developed to store and integrate the different types of information obtained.
