Abstract
In developing countries where poor sanitation and hygiene contribute to spread of disease, building latrines is one step towards improving the situation. But there are cases where once built, latrines are neither used nor maintained. In Mali the problem of disease spread through fecal contamination is serious: over 46 percent of the population is affected. If children could be taught good hygiene practices at school there would be an impact on the incidence of disease. This project will evaluate latrine installation programs in schools and villages in Mali and will establish a program to install more appropriate low-cost latrines there. It is the first time that such a project is carried out at the national level, supplying planners with valuable information.
