Abstract
In Mali, 84 per cent of the population lives in rural areas, illiteracy is widespread and school attendance is very low. The rate of attendance in the Mopti region in the north is 9.5 per cent compared to 38.9 per cent in Bamako, the capital. Educational reforms introduced since independence have not improved attendance, especially in northern rural areas hard hit by the drought. This project will study the institutional and economic obstacles to normal school attendance. Students, parents, teachers, school principals and village chiefs will participate in the survey through questionnaires, group discussions and workshops.
