Abstract
Farming and cultivation systems research is extremely important for the improvement of basic agricultural productivity in Mali, one of the poorest countries in the world. Phase I of this project collected data and trained staff in cultivation research methods. In Phase II, researcher and farmer-managed trials of a maize, manure and fertilizer package resulted in increased cereal production. Phase III tested this package in four additional villages, and identified constraints on increased agricultural production. One main output of this project has been the establishment of cooperation between the research team and the extension personnel of the Compagnie malienne de développement des textiles (CMDT), the development agency in the region. This final phase will upgrade the technological package so that it can be applied on a larger scale, and ensure that the CMDT will continue to participate in the research and training of appropriate personnel in this systems approach to cultivation.
