Abstract
The farmer/shepherds of the Sahelian sub-region traditionally and frequently use several dozen woody species to feed their flocks during the dry season. Attempts by the Centre international pour l'élevage en Afrique (CIPEA) to introduce new species to reforest stripped land have failed due to a succession of dry years and a lack of protection and maintenance. To combat these problems, this project will introduce the "alley cropping" system to a region of Mali that has an annual rainfall of less than 500 millimetres. "Alley cropping" is an agroforestry technique in which food/feed crops are grown in alleys formed by hedgerows of trees or shrubs. The integration of Acacia and Prosopis with millet will present fewer problems in maintaining and managing these species, the short-term farming of which will provide firewood and livestock feed.
