Abstract
One of the components of primary health care policy in Mali is the exploitation of the resources of traditional medicine, stressing phytotherapy (plant therapy) and the systematic laboratory study of the main pharmaceutics used by traditional healers. This project will study the ways and means to reconcile the exploitation of medicinal plant resources with the protection of the environment. It will also research the feasibility of medicinal plant cultivation at a scale required for a continuous production of improved traditional drugs. Specifically, it will study the territorial distribution of 3 "medicine" species much in demand; the management of natural plant populations and plantations; the channelling of traditional drugs (collection, marketing, etc.); and population participation. The improvement of plant research management will be developed in consideration of the needs of the young Malian pharmaceutical industry.
