Abstract
This grant will allow two consultants to undertake a preliminary study of the "pasantia" as a form of social participation, and its effect on learning and health-related community actions. Pasantia is the name given to a special work-study program that takes place in rural locations in Mozambique. A group of health workers and community members critically analyze their respective situations with a view to transforming how community health is viewed, taught and practiced. The pasantia program intends to foster community development skills, participatory action research (PAR), popular educational practices and appropriate technologies; explore traditional views and practices with respect to healing; and rediscover the benefits of working through supportive relationships. One of the consultants is a Canadian PhD student experienced in participatory action research and the other is a Mozambican ethnographer, who will be actively involved in all stages of the pasantia.
