Abstract

The purpose of this activity is to develop an appropriate business plan for the sustainable deployment of a metropolitan area network, the promotion of Internet service provision in the Beira area and the promotion of the Internet among potential users. This is a collaborative initiative between IDRC, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s Sustainable Development Networking Programme and the Government of Mozambique. The business model for the establishment of sustainable Internet service provision in Beira will be developed in conjunction with local interest groups, including a Beira economist, aspiring Internet service providers, government users, the Catholic University, and others to be identified. The process will be facilitated by IDRC and supported by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa. Since there is no benchmark for such services in Beira, the approach will be pragmatic and based on an analysis of the local business environment. Valuable learning from the Maputo experience of establishing data networks and Internet service provision will be incorporated where appropriate.
