Canada's International Development Research Centre ( IDRC) has been named a Chevalier de l’Ordre National (Knight of the National Order) – Burkina Faso’s highest honour – for its contribution to the development of the country. Burkina Faso awards the medal to individuals and organizations who have worked to advance the country and its citizens. The decree, signed by President Blaise Compaoré, cited IDRC’s work in strengthening Burkina Faso’s research capacities in a range of areas including agroforestry, natural resource management, and poverty alleviation. The award was presented on November 25, 2006 at the closing ceremonies of the 7th Forum national de la recherche scientifique et des innovations technologiques (FRSIT) in Ouagadougou. Innocent Butare, a Senior IDRC Program Officer based in IDRC's Regional Office for West and Central Africa in Senegal, accepted the award on behalf of the Centre.
