IDRC Visiting Executive, Howard Alper, has been named co-chair of the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) on International Issues. The network of science academies from 90 countries offers advice to governments on international science-based issues.

The announcement was made at the IAP’s Conference and General Assembly in Alexandria, Egypt, in December 2006.

“I can think of no one more superbly qualified to serve as co-chair of the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues than Dr Howard Alper,” said Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill Univeristy.

“Dr. Alper is a distinguished Canadian scientist who has shaped science policy, conducted outstanding research, and traveled extensively to engage in collaborative scientific undertakings…His scientific leadership uniquely qualifies him to serve in this role, and is a source of pride for Canada.”

Alper joined IDRC in September 2006. While at IDRC, Dr Alper will help build linkages between researchers from the South and the North, and enhance joint learning and institutional linkages between IDRC and key Canadian research and academic communities.
