IDRC was saddened to learn of the sudden death of one of its longtime research partners, Argentinian economist Daniel Chudnovsky, on January 16, 2007 at age 62.

Daniel Chudnovsky earned his PhD in economics from Oxford University and was most recently a professor of international business and development economics at the University of San Andrés and Director of the Centro de Investigaciones para la Transformación (CENIT) in Argentina.

During his career, Daniel worked as a professor of economic development at the University of Buenos Aires, as an economist for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, and as the Director of the Centro de Economía Internacional, in Argentina.

He was one of the founders and key pillars of the Mercosur Economic Research Network based in Uruguay.

As well as leading a number of IDRC-funded projects dating back to the early 1990s, Daniel was one of the first recipients of IDRC’s Research on Knowledge Systems (RoKS) award in 2001, and was part of a team of researchers that won RoKS’ fourth competition on developmental universities in December 2006.

He is one of the contributing authors to an upcoming IDRC-UNU Press book entitled, Industrial Innovation and Environmental Regulation: Developing Workable Solutions. Daniel was also in the process of finalizing a chapter for a forthcoming IDRC publication focusing on work he carried out with RoKS in 2001.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.
