| The Importance of Competition Policy Discussed at IDRC-sponsored Panel |

News 93 of 193
It is the "market" mechanism said to drive innovation, efficiency, and productivity as companies compete against one another for customers.
Though competition is one of the key pillars of capitalism, the importance of competition policies in today’s economies is not well understood.
Led by Maureen O’Neil, President of IDRC, a panel of experts discussed this issue from various angles during the IDRC-sponsored event Competition Policy at the Service of Development at the Conférence de Montréal held on June 20.
Speakers included Taimoon Stewart, Senior of the University of the West Indies; Robert K. Rennhack, Assistant Director, Western Hemisphere Department, International Monetary Fund; Phil Evans, Head of Consumer Policy, Finsbury International Policy & Regulatory Advisers, Belgium; and Sheridan Scott, Commissioner of Competition, Industry Canada.
