APEIR Research Contributes to Addressing Emerging Infectious Diseases

The current global crisis related to Influenza A (H1N1) shows that there is still insufficient understanding of the emergence of diseases with pandemic potential and governments need research-based evidence to develop policies in situations of great urgency. The Asian Partnership for Emerging Infectious Diseases Research (APEIR) is a regional initiative which is contributing to addressing these needs. Its role in fostering regional research collaborations was recognized in a Joint Ministerial Statement issued by ASEAN+3 Health Ministers Special Meeting on Influenza A in Bangkok, Thailand on 8 May 2009.
