Thirty-one thousand people in Sri Lanka were killed in the December 2004 tsunami, despite being an hour and a half away from the disaster's epicenter — ample time to have warned people to seek higher ground. To prevent such a large loss of life in the future, 32 coastal villages will test a satellite-based disaster warning system, prior to coast-wide implementation.
