IDRC Research Results on Co-Management of Natural Resources Get Rave Reviews in New Delhi
Dr. Stephen McGurk, IDRC Regional Director of the South Asia office; Dr S. P. Tiwari, Deputy Director, Education Division and Crop Sciences Division, ICAR; and Dr. Stephen Tyler, book author.

When IDRC decided to launch its in-focus Co-management of Natural Resources: Local learning for poverty reduction by Stephen Tyler at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) in New Delhi, India, it generated a tonic effect even before it reached the NRM community (a minority in Delhi). The mere mention of it generated much interest even before its actual launch. The launch resulted in three separate events at three different venues. The venues targeted three different audiences: relevant national NGOs, international donors and development organizations, and national and international research organizations.

On Jan 22, 2007, IDRC launched it in collaboration with Winrock International India. The event was marked by a presentation by Dr. Tyler followed by a panel discussion on the book. The panelists who included Dr Dr Kinsuk Mitra: President, Winrock International India; Dr Purnamita Dasgupta, Indian Council for Research on International Economics and Ms Seema Bhatt, Biodiversity Conservation Consultant, gave it glowing review urging the audience for ready reference. Dr. Tyler had a chance interact with the audience and meet up with some of the prominent members present.

At Delhi Sustainable Development Summit on Jan 23 Dr Tyler’s three minutes presentation at the close of the session focusing on NRM and poverty had the audience gasping for more. Speakers in the session included Warren Evans, Director of the World Bank Environment Department, along with several prominent European and US academics (environmental economists and heads of corporate or government institutes). Though some of the previous presentations were interesting, most tended to be at a very aggregated or theoretical level and used northern examples. Dr. Tyler’s short presentation of the Comanagement book emphasized, by contrast, its practical relevance and the fact that it presented results from developing country researchers. It was heartening to see Dr. Tyler being approached by a number of people, including Dr Evans, to discuss the book and website further.

Further down the week on Jan 25, 2007, the book was launched amidst the scientific staff of Indian Centers for Agriculture Research and Biodiversity International. Chairing the session for the book launch, the chief guest Dr S. P. Tiwari, Deputy Director, Education Division and Crop Sciences Division, ICAR and host: Dr Bhag Mal, Director, Bioversity International had praise for the messages of the book.

The three presentations reached three different audiences, led to the review of the book by prominent NGO executives, as well as by a handful of researchers and senior government research managers; led to distribution of about 100 copies into the hands of practicing researchers and government officials; and generated some internet presence as well on partner websites in addition to media coverage.
