Résumé des fonctions

The purpose of the Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) research and capacity development program is to significantly improve the capacity of African countries to adapt to climate change in ways that benefit the most vulnerable. The program involves and engages users from beginning to end by actively promoting Participatory Action Research (PAR), to better define research questions and facilitate the process of transferring or devolving results and skills to those who will use them.

Based in Nairobi, Kenya and reporting to the Program Leader of Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) and the Regional Director, the Senior Program Specialist’s role is to develop projects within the CCAA priority areas by reviewing, developing, monitoring, managing and evaluating research projects; and liaising and maintaining productive working relationships with partners, researchers and government institutions. He/she will take the lead in managing a portfolio of Program Initiatives and corporate projects (10-20 projects) and Research Support Projects valued at $5-7 million.

Profil de candidature

Études

  • PhD. (preferred) or Masters Degree and record of publications, in a relevant natural or environmental science or an area of applied environmental research for development such as environmental studies, physical geography or natural resources management.


  • Expérience

    This position requires a minimum of eight years’ relevant experience, which includes:

  • Experience in managing research projects from project design to project implementation
  • Experience working on climate change and adaptation research and/or environment and natural resource management
  • Applied research experience in adaptation, preferably in Eastern or Southern Africa
  • Experience in designing and delivering research capacity building


  • Language

  • A superior knowledge of English is essential for this position

  • Connaissances

  • Sound knowledge on climate change and its impacts on agricultural production, water security, human health and ecosystems in Africa
  • Understanding of vulnerability (biophysical and social) and its linkages to climate change in Africa
  • Understanding of key development priorities in Africa and interlinkages with climate change adaptation
  • Good understanding of current "stressors" and how these interact with climate change and variability to reduce the adaptive capacity of vulnerable and affected communities
  • Good knowledge of governance and institutional dynamics in Africa
  • Knowledge of and links to existing professional and climate change adaptation networks in the region and beyond

  • Information additionnelle

    This position involves travel of 60 - 90 days per year.
