IDRC has worked in close collaboration with Africans since 1971.

The Centre’s operations are guided through two regional offices:

• in Dakar, Senegal, established in 1973 to serve West and Central Africa; and
• in Nairobi, Kenya, established in 1975 to serve Eastern and Southern Africa.

These offices function as nerve centres for the Centre’s operations in 26 countries. In the past 30 years, IDRC has supported some 2,500 research projects directed and managed by African researchers and institutions. IDRC’s research focus in Africa has evolved in response to the changing needs and priorities of the countries it serves. .
